Hello Everyone!
Our topic this time is how to avoid making the hiring authority think you are an unreliable flake.
If you give that impression, all the latest fads in job search won’t help you. Job search is difficult enough, without putting roadblocks in your own way. You have to remember that there are multiples of job seekers who want the same position that you do.
You really only have a small window to:
1) Grab their attention
2) Get your point across
3) Get them to want to talk to you
At any time along this job search continuum, you can slip and hurt yourself if you aren’t diligent. Some things you can’t control, like a flat tire on the way to a meeting, but many things ARE under your control.
So let’s say you get to the point where a hiring authority wants to talk to you. How you conduct yourself next will make all the difference. The right thing to do is:
MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE TO THE HIRING AUTHORITY.
I am amazed by the amount of so called adult professionals who:
1) Have a cell phone with no voicemail set up
2) Have a cell phone they never turn on
3) have a cell phone, and never check messages
4) Never check their inboxes and spam folders
5) Never return calls and emails
This will cause the hiring authority to give up on you if they can’t find you. But it gets worse==worse than the candidate who can’t be found is the candidate who agrees to the meeting or the phone call, and then does not show up. No phone call, no email, nothing.
Not only will the hiring authority quit on you, all the headhunters in your little world will blackball you, because you are a flake who will waste their time.
Hear me on this. You need a job. They have jobs. You have to work with them and be nice to them for any of this stuff to work. If you are already working fulltime, I get it, but still, there is no excuse to wall yourself off and be incommunicative.
Actions and words mean things to people, and you are responsible for the impressions you give. If you take a casual approach to job search and the people involved, guess what happens? You get what you deserve. If you see yourself in these words, then change. Fix it today. If my words offend you, great! My aim is to wake the sleeping and unaware…this is important stuff.
Always remember, job hunting is a contact sport, but they have to find you, in order to contact you.
Until next time, I wish you all the best.
