Daily Move To Your Goal

“If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done. Make at least one definite move daily toward your goal.” ~ Bruce Lee

As I write this, it is June 20th, the 39th anniversary of the death of Bruce Lee…You might wonder what Bruce Lee has to do with a job search blog…Well, I will tell you…I get a lot of nice feedback from you guys telling me how much my writing inspires you to move forward, or think differently… I bring up one of my favorite Bruce Lee quotes, because he is someone who has inspired ME as a martial artist and coach with his teachings…and since I always share what I learn, here we are.
Much of what Bruce Lee taught centered around the development of the self…he understood that one could not grow and succeed if one hung on to ways of thinking and doing things that did not produce results…The quote above (to me anyway) speaks to the unproductive and job search killing “habit of procrastination.”
Normally when I talk about procrastination, I am talking about killing hours on Facebook or Twitter or internet job ads, rather than doing the hard work of job search…in this case, I am talking about procrastination brought on by “overthinking”…this is an easy trap to fall into, especially for you cerebral / analytical types who “perfect” everything to death… The worst thing you can do is spend an hour tweaking “the perfect” voice mail message or opening line, and then make just three calls before calling it a day…OR, you go to an industry function, and spend all night rehearsing in your mind what you will say to someone, and never leave the bar. Call me judgmental, but I think people who continually do that are either lazy or scared..
Don’t get me wrong, there is always a place for good solid thinking, practice and rehearsal, you just can’t make the mistake of living there full time. Set a time aside for the thinking and planning, and then stop doing that, and then go apply your thinking and planning…
Here’s a secret…nothing will go according to your rehearsed scripts anyway…people who answer phones, texts and emails have this annoying habit of reacting to you through the filter of what’s going on in their world at that moment, so you’d better be ready to have a real discussion with a real person…the only way to get good at that, is to have a lot more real discussions with real people. As a coach, I think that’s one of the most worthwhile goals a job seeker can have – more real conversations with real people.
Until next time, I wish you all the best.
